The law basis

The law on standardization of Bosnia and Herzegovina (“Official gazette of B&H” no. 19/01),
The law on establishment the Institute for standardization of Bosnia and Herzegovina , (“Official gazette of B&H” no. 44/04).

In accordance with the law on establishment, the Institute is an autonomous institution of government administration for affairs related to standardization area.
By this law, Institute for standardization took over the affairs from the standardization area that were formerly appointed by the Law on establishment to Institute for standardization, metrology and intellectual property of B&H, (“Official gazette of B&H” no. 29/00 and 19/01).

Basic activities

The Institute proposes the strategy of standardization in B&H, prepares and publics standards of Bosnia and Herzegovina, represents and acts on behalf of Bosnia and Herzegovina in international, European and other interstate organizations for standardization, and performs other tasks that originate from international agreements and memberships in the organizations. It participates in preparing technical regulations, develops and establishes the information system of standards of B&H, organizes and carries out specialist education of personnel in standardization area. It is engaged in issuing-publishing activities for standardization area.

In the area of conformityy assesment, it is included in establishing and maintenance the system of certification and homologation in accordance with European model. It represents Bosnia and Herzegovina in European and international organizations for conformity assessment (EOTC and EUROLAB, etc.) until the association of test laboratories and association of calibration laboratories are formed and organizes education from the conformity assessment area.

Strategic objectives

• Raising the reputation of standardization of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
• Raising the level of consciousness of public in Bosnia and Herzegovina related to the importance and role of standardization through seminars, media and other kinds of contacts.
• Promotion and development of standardization of Bosnia and Herzegovina to reach the target of fulfillment the conditions for the status of full membership in European organizations for standardization CEN and CENELEC.
• Joining the experts from Bosnia and Herzegovina in active work of international and European working bodies for standardization in areas that are of importance for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
• Advancement the information activities related to standards and technical regulations for the sake of better informing all stakeholders, in B&H as well as out of the country.

Full member of: International Organization for Standardization ISO since 1997 and European Institute for Standards in Telecommunications ETSI since 1997.

Associate member of: International Electrotechnics Commission IEC since 1997, European Committee for Standardization CEN since 2008., and European Committee for Standardization in Electrotechnics CENELEC since 1999.
