Activity of Institute for standardization of B&H in domain of conformity assessment is determined by The law on establishment Institute for standardization of B&H:
"Participates in setting up and maintenance of certification and homologation system, in accordance with European model. Represents Bosnia and Herzegovina in European and international organizations for conformity assessment (EOTC and EUROLAB, etc.) until the association of testing laboratories and association of calibration laboratories are formed and organizes education in conformity assessment field."
According to previous Law on standardization in B&H (1993) Bureau (later on Institute) for standardization, metrology and patents (later on intellectual property) of B&H was authorized for carrying out quality regulations and normatives for products, products attesting and authorizing the organizations for products attesting.
By new Law on standardization (2001), and Law on technical requirements for products and conformity assessment for products in B&H (2004) after it, authority for technical regulations and authorizing bodies for conformity assessment passed to Ministry of external trade and economic relations of B&H. That is why Institute for standardization, metrology and patents of B&H, by mid-year 2006 stopped with accepting requests for products certifications that acted till that time in accordance with authorizations given by the old Law.

Institute for standardization of B&H is registered state body for administrative representation of B&H with ECE WP.29 related matters of motor and attaching vehicles homologation from 1997. In that role it was involved in preparing new law regulations on traffic safety on roads in B&H.
